MUSEUM OF RECLAIMED URBAN SPACE PRESENTS
*POLITICS OF PUNK: RADICAL ACTION IN RADICAL TIMES*
ARCHIVAL POSTER, PHOTO AND VIDEO EXHIBIT OPENING SUNDAY, AUGUST 5, 2018
With punk rock among the bedrock that formed the character of the East Village, the punk sounds coming out of the Tompkins Square Park band shell energized this activist community to defend the neighborhood they created. The Museum of Reclaimed Urban Space (MoRUS) looks back on this watershed era in New York City history with a wide-ranging exhibit, POLITICS OF PUNK: RADICAL ACTION IN RADICAL TIMES, highlighting rare images of the musicians, activists and agitators who rejected the status quo and championed causes they believed in. Celebrating generations of punks across the globe as well as punk’s evolution and impact on the East Village squatter scene, POLITICS OF PUNK will open at MoRUS following the 30th Anniversary Concert in Tompkins Square Park on Sunday, August 5 at 7:00 PM.
During the two-month exhibition, POLITICS OF PUNK will stage multimedia performances including live punk shows. Opening night August 5 will include comics slide shows by Eric Drooker and Seth Tobocman with music by Eric Blitz, Stefan Christoff and Suzanne Shoshke-Rayzl Yuni. Additionally, Paul Garrin will screen By Any Means Necessary, his classic documentary about the Tompkins Square Movement focusing on the events ranging from 1988 to 1991. Live performances include Mob 47 and Protest Bengt on Thursday, August 16 from 7:00 – 11:00 PM, Warm Thoughts on Saturday, August 25 from 7:00 – 11:00 PM and The Hempsteady, United Snakes and Sad Faced Dog on Friday, September 7th starting at 8:30pm at C-Squat.
